This is a Middle School Art assignment focused on creatively interpreting the four basic objects: sphere, cube, cone, and cylinder into a refined piece of art.
We spend a few weeks learning how to draw the four basic objects quickly with freehand lines and circles, then progress to combining the four basic objects into more complex arrangements. The final assignment offers two basic structures for a couple of characters. Students are prompted to create two characters with simple but compelling backstories for an imaginary client who wants to create a cartoon based on the best concept art for the two characters. We stress the importance of reflection and refinement. We want to love our character and not just the first idea that comes to mind. We like to draw several different options before settling on a favorite. Once the assignment is complete, we do a pin-up and critique of their work and vote for their favorite. The top vote-getter wins the job!
